Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to repot the plant when it arrives?

No. Both the 3 litre and 10 litre sizes come ready to go straight into the pond in their mesh basket. The 3 litre can be moved into a larger basket later if you want more root room, but it isn't required.

How deep should I plant it?

Plant at a depth of 30-80 cm, lowering the basket gradually over a few days so the leaves can stretch up to the surface.

How much space will it need as it grows?

Allow for a spread of roughly 70-90 cm once established.

Can I plant it near a fountain or waterfall?

It's best kept in still water, away from splashing, as moving water can affect how well it flowers.

When does it flower?

Flowers appear from June through to September.

A water lily with flowers dark enough to pass for black, floating on plum-toned blooms through summer. It suits ponds with plenty of direct sun and still water, giving a strong splash of colour without asking for much besides the right spot. Supplied already potted in a mesh basket, in your choice of 3 litre or 10 litre size, so it's ready to lower straight into the pond.

Nymphaea Almost Black is a water lily grown for flowers so deeply plum-toned they count among the darkest shades found in red lilies. New leaves emerge with a bronze flush before settling to green as the plant matures, adding depth to the display even before the flowers open.

It suits ponds positioned in open sun with still water, giving reliable colour on the surface right through the summer. Because splashing and moving water can get in the way of flowering, a spot away from fountains helps it perform as it should.

You receive one plant, already established in its mesh aquatic basket, ready to lower straight into the pond with no repotting needed first. What sets it apart from paler varieties is the depth of colour, among the darkest reds grown for ponds, paired with foliage that shifts from bronze to green as the season goes on.
