This filter pulls coarse debris out of the water before it ever reaches the filter media, which reduces how often you need to get your hands dirty cleaning it. A self-cleaning belt and sponges you can rinse in place mean upkeep is a quick check rather than a full strip-down, and the double-sealed motor is built to keep working season after season. It comes in three sizes, so whether you've got a modest garden pond or a larger koi setup there's a version sized for it.
Overview
The Oase BioTec ScreenMatic² is a flow-through pond filter that screens out coarse dirt before it reaches the filter media itself, which is what keeps the media clean and cuts down the maintenance the filter needs over time. Sensors track how dirty the unit is getting and drive the cleaning belt automatically, with an LED showing when action is needed, so you're not guessing when to intervene. When the filter sponges do need attention, they're cleaned directly inside the unit rather than pulled out and scrubbed elsewhere, and a bottom drain with a slide lets you clear sludge out without dismantling anything.
A water distributor spreads flow evenly across the filter belt, which stops the localised clogging that causes uneven wear, and built-in dirt barriers keep debris from washing back out of the unit. Inside, several types of filter foam with different pore sizes handle both the mechanical straining and the biological side of filtration, and a large debris basket makes it easy to lift out and empty what's been caught.
Key benefits
- Coarse debris is screened out before it reaches the filter media, reducing how much maintenance the unit needs
- Cleaning belt runs automatically based on how dirty the sensors detect it to be, with an LED showing when cleaning is required
- Filter sponges are cleaned in place rather than removed for scrubbing
- Bottom drain with a slide clears sludge without taking the unit apart
- Even water distribution across the belt helps prevent clogging
- Large debris basket lifts out for easy emptying
- Direct connection option for OASE UVC Bitron C and Eco clarifiers
Choosing your size
The three models are built around the same design but differ in how much water they can handle, and how that changes once you factor in fish. As a general pattern, the safe pond volume drops once fish are present, and drops again for koi ponds specifically, so pick your model against your actual stocking rather than just the total volume of water:
- BioTec ScreenMatic² 40,000: suited to smaller ponds, dropping in recommended capacity once fish or koi are added
- BioTec ScreenMatic² 60,000: the mid-range option, for ponds that outgrow the 40,000
- BioTec ScreenMatic² 90,000: the largest of the three, for bigger ponds or heavier koi stocking
See the variant guidance below for the specific flow rate and pond volume figures for each size.
Keeping it running
Day to day, the automatic cleaning system takes care of the belt on its own, driven by how dirty the sensors detect the water to be, and the LED tells you when it's worth checking on. The belt itself folds down for easier access when you do want to clean the foam by hand. For thread algae specifically, PhosLess filter cartridges can be added as an accessory, and the filter is designed to pair with OASE AquaMax Eco pumps and connect directly to Bitron C or Bitron Eco UVC clarifiers if you're running one alongside it.
