Polystichum polyblepharum is an evergreen fern that holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit, a mark given to plants judged reliable and garden-worthy. Its arching fronds have a glossy finish and form a tidy, rounded clump rather than spreading untidily.
It tolerates low light levels well, so it works in spots under trees, in shaded borders or against walls where flowering plants often struggle. Growth is steady rather than rampant, so a clump fills in over time without needing constant cutting back.
Plant it into damp ground that isn't waterlogged, in a sheltered position, and tidy away old foliage as it's needed to keep the clump looking neat. Dig the planting hole deep enough to take the whole root ball when you remove the plant from its pot.
