Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to repot the plant before placing it in my pond?

No. Both the 1 litre and 3 litre sizes can go straight in, basket and all, though you can move the 1 litre into a larger basket if you want stronger growth.

How deep should I plant it?

Start it no deeper than half the maximum recommended planting depth to let it establish, then lower it to its full planting depth of 5 to 20 cm.

Does it need much ongoing maintenance?

Very little. Once the foliage has died back in autumn, trim the plant back just above the water surface to tidy it for next year.

What will stop it falling over as it gets taller?

If it grows past 60cm, repot it into a larger mesh basket or add a layer of gravel on top, since taller growth is more prone to toppling in a breeze.

Pontederia cordata is a tall marginal plant suited to pond keepers planting the back of a margin, where its spikes of blue flowers stand above heart-shaped foliage. It slowly builds into a fuller clump over the seasons, which gives lasting structure and colour without heavy maintenance. It's supplied as a single plant in a mesh aquatic basket, ready to position on the marginal shelf.

Pontederia cordata is a tall, late-flowering marginal pond plant that carries spikes of blue flowers above heart-shaped foliage, and it holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit. It provides height and structure at the back of a pond planting scheme, and its slow spread into a larger clump keeps colour going in the margin as the planting matures. The RHS recognition and its late-season habit are what set it apart as a structural choice for a pond margin.

It suits pond keepers building a marginal planting scheme who want extra height and later-season colour toward the back of a display. It won't quickly outgrow its space, so it stays manageable while it fills out into a larger clump over a few seasons.

You get a single plant in a mesh aquatic basket, supplied as 1 litre or 3 litre depending on the size you choose. There's no need to remove the basket before planting, whichever size you pick.
