Frequently Asked Questions

What thickness is this pond liner?

This product is 0.75mm thick, made from Butyl.

How do I choose the correct size?

This product is available in 2 width options (1.7m, 3m) and 49 length options from 1m to 25m. Measure your pond's width, length and depth to work out the size you need, allowing extra for the pond's profile and an overlap at the edges.

What does the Matting option mean?

Matting is an optional protective underlay laid beneath the pond liner to help protect it from sharp stones and roots in the excavation. This product is available with no matting, or with AquaSHIELD protective matting in 200gsm, 275gsm weights.

A heavy-duty black butyl rubber pond liner made by SealEco in Sweden, 0.75mm thick and rated for over 40 years of service. Its UV stable, puncture-resistant construction protects garden ponds, larger ponds and box-welded koi installations, and it's safe for fish and plant life once installed. Available in a range of widths and lengths, with optional AquaSHIELD protective matting.

Key benefits

  • UV stable, flexible and puncture-resistant butyl rubber, built for heavy-duty pond use
  • 300% elongation lets the liner move and settle with the ground beneath it
  • Manufacturer-stated life span of over 40 years
  • Can be joined on site for bespoke installations, or supplied as vulcanised box-welded liners for ornamental and koi ponds
  • Safe for fish and plant life once correctly installed

Material and construction

This liner is 0.75mm thick butyl rubber, weighing 1.00kg per square metre, with an elongation of around 300% according to SealEco's specification. That elongation allows the liner to stretch and settle against the contours of your excavation rather than sitting rigid across it.

Why choose butyl over EPDM

Butyl rubber liners have a long track record with garden designers and contractors, but the butyl polymer itself has become significantly more expensive over the years. Many customers have since moved to EPDM alternatives such as SealEco's own GreenSeal range or Elevate PondGard, which have similar properties and in some cases perform even better, at a lower cost. AquaticsHub continues to stock butyl for customers who prefer it, or for projects where price is a lower priority than the material itself.

Protective matting (optional)

AquaticsHub recommends fitting a good quality underlay beneath any butyl liner to protect it from stones and roots in the ground. AquaSHIELD protective matting is available as an add-on in 200gsm and 275gsm.
