Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between the two options?

The single option is one plant already potted into a 3 litre mesh aquatic basket, ready to place on the shelf. The pack of three gives you three plants, each in a 9cm pot, which you'll need to pot into your own mesh basket before planting.

How deep should I plant it?

The recommended planting depth is 0-30 cm, but it's best to start young plants shallower, no more than a third of that maximum depth, and move them deeper once they've established.

Does it spread quickly?

Yes, it's rated as a vigorous (invasive) grower, so it suits larger ponds or wildlife areas better than small, contained features unless you're prepared to manage its spread.

How much maintenance does it need?

Very little. Once the foliage dies back in autumn, trim it back to just above the water surface to tidy it up for the next season.

A native marginal that fills in fast around the margins, Sparganium erectum helps give pond wildlife natural cover and suits wildlife or naturalistic planting schemes. It's available as a single plant already potted in its own mesh basket, or as a pack of three potted plants for covering more ground.

Sparganium erectum is a native marginal plant used by landscapers in wildlife planting schemes for the cover it gives nesting and feeding wildfowl. It suits ponds and naturalistic schemes where a fast-establishing native is wanted around the margins or on a shelf. You can buy it as a single plant already potted into its own mesh aquatic basket, ready to place straight onto the shelf, or as a pack of three plants supplied in pots, for covering more ground in one go. The potted-plant pack doesn't come with a basket, so you'll need your own mesh aquatic basket before potting them for the pond. As a true native rather than an ornamental variety, it's suited to schemes aimed at supporting local wildlife, and it flowers through the summer months above upright growth that reaches well over a metre tall. Maintenance is minimal: once the foliage dies back in autumn, trim it back to just above the water surface to tidy it up for the following season.
