Greater Duckweed spreads quickly across the water's surface, giving fish shaded cover and helping limit the nutrients that feed algae. It's supplied as young plantlets in the 1-2-Grow! tissue-culture format, suited to both new and experienced aquarium keepers.
Spirodela polyrrhiza, commonly known as Greater Duckweed, is a free-floating aquarium plant whose small, rounded green fronds drift across the surface, giving the tank the layered look of a natural pond. It suits aquarists who want a low-maintenance floating plant that helps shade fish from strong light and keeps algae in check by competing with it for the nutrients it needs to grow.
As it multiplies, Spirodela polyrrhiza draws nutrients out of the water, which is described as helping to keep water quality steadier over time. It's not a plant to leave untouched though: because it spreads so readily, thinning it back regularly stops it covering the whole surface and shading out plants growing below.
What you get is a pack of three 1-2-Grow! cups of Spirodela polyrrhiza tissue-culture plantlets. What sets it apart is its origin: this duckweed is native to North America.
