Frequently Asked Questions

Does this plant need a bigger basket as it grows?

Plants that grow past 60cm in height benefit from moving into a larger mesh basket, or can be planted into gravel instead to stop them toppling in a breeze.

How deep should I plant it?

It depends on the size you buy: 9cm pot plants should start no deeper than a third of the maximum planting depth, 1 litre plants around half that depth, and the 3 litre and 5 litre sizes can go straight onto the pond shelf at the depth you need.

What should I do with the seed heads over winter?

They can be left on the plant through winter if you like the look of them, though it's best to clear them away if they start falling into the water.

Does the 9cm pot pack come with a mesh basket?

No, the 9cm pot plants need potting into a mesh basket yourself before they go into the pond.

Will the plant look cut back if I order it out of season?

It may arrive cut back if bought outside the main growing season; this is normal for this plant.

A native marginal pond plant that gives height and seasonal structure to the pond edge, supplied as a single plant or a pack of three depending on the size you choose. Its fast growth rate helps establish cover quickly, and the dark brown seed heads add interest into autumn and winter.

Typha angustifolia is a native reedmace marginal plant, slimmer and more upright than the larger Typha latifolia, which makes it a better fit for ponds where height is wanted without a lot of spread. It suits wildlife ponds and larger water features, and its fast growth rate helps it establish ground cover and structure within a season. It's suited to full-sun positions around the pond margin.

Depending on the size you order, you'll receive either a single plant or a pack of three. The 1 litre, 3 litre and 5 litre sizes are supplied in mesh aquatic baskets ready to plant, while the 9cm pot pack of three arrives in pots and will need potting into a mesh basket before it goes into the pond.

What sets this plant apart is its seed head: smaller and darker than Typha latifolia, in a chocolate-brown shade that's frequently used by florists in dried arrangements.
