Frequently Asked Questions

Can I plant this in my garden pond?

It isn't recommended for garden ponds. Its vigorous growth means it does better around the margins of large lakes.

Does the 1 litre plant need repotting before planting?

No, it can go straight into the pond in its mesh basket, though a larger basket will support it as it grows taller.

How deep should I plant it?

Start it at no more than half the maximum recommended planting depth, which helps it establish before you move it deeper.

What do I do with the seed heads over winter?

They can be left on the plant through winter for interest, but clear any that fall into the water, and cut the foliage back before spring growth starts.

A vigorous native bulrush suited to large lake margins rather than garden ponds, supplied as an established 1 litre plant in its mesh basket. It gives real height and movement to lakeside planting, with dark chocolate seed heads that carry interest into winter.

Typha latifolia is the common bulrush, grown here as a vigorous native marginal that reaches greater height and bulk than other bulrush varieties. Its scale makes it unsuitable for a typical garden pond; it comes into its own around the margins of large lakes. Planted there, it gives height, structure and movement to naturalistic schemes through the growing season.

Through summer it produces dark chocolate-coloured seed heads that stand well above the water. These can be left in place over winter for visual interest, though it's worth clearing any that drop into the water, and the old foliage is best cut back before new spring growth begins.

You receive one established plant supplied in its 1 litre mesh basket, ready to go straight into the margin without repotting. If stock is offered outside the main growing season, it may arrive cut back rather than in full leaf.

As a native UK marginal, it suits planting schemes built around locally occurring species, and it performs best in an open, sunny spot at the water's edge.
